Australia Twice Traversed Ernest Giles 9781725174559 Books Reviews

  • I would have really enjoyed the book had the pictures and maps been included in the edition. It was really hard to follow their travels without them. I had been to Australia the year before but couldn't figure out the places I had visited in the outback without the maps. According to the introduction to the book several maps etc were in the original book. When pictures are not included in editions it makes reading them much less enjoyable, and this seems to happen a lot with e-books.

If everything had been included in the book I would have given it a much higher rating as what they endured was a triumph of survival.
  • I found it difficult to believe how these people advanced into the vast barren wastelands with absolutely no assurance of finding water. I am humbled by the fortitude it required, when water wasn't found, to retrace their steps back to their starting point, and keep trying other routes all the while getting farther away from the possibility of rescue. This in the face of triple digit temperatures a d sometimes hostile natives.
  • A true classic in the annals of Australian exploration. But be warned if you've never been exploring in the never never, or don't even know where it is, you'll need to brush up on your Australian history and geography, and get a good map, before you head off into the back o' beyond with Giles.
  • This book gave great insight into the Australia. I was looking for more of a travel companion, so it didn't quite fit what I needed, but great information.
  • great read
  • Told by the Explorer himself, a revealing account of what life was like in the 1870's as he crossed Australia and the incredible hardships that were endured by all. In places he is given to very flowery verbosity, but this was the way in those days, there is certainly enough interesting information to carry the reader along on the expeditions. To understand why some place names were given and are still in place today stands as a testament to his achievments.

However I was not able to see the many illustrations that were in the book,on my , a great pity.

I really wanted to follow the expeditions on a good map.

A small epilogue on this man's life after he completed these epic journeys would have added to the book. To say he was not honoured for all his achievements would be an understatement.

For those interested in travel, and the Outback I would endorse this book whole heartedly.
